The easiest and fastest way to enter transactions in Banana Accounting Plus is to import transactions directly from the bank statement into the Transactions table, avoiding manual entry.
After importing, the transactions must be completed with the necessary accounts and contra accounts. With the Advanced plan, this operation can also be automated thanks to the Rules for the automatic completion of imported transactions, which allow Banana Accounting to recognize and automatically complete transactions in subsequent imports.
If you want to import transactions from other sources, for example from another Banana Accounting file, see the Import Transactions (Generic) page.

Import procedure
- From the Actions > Import into accounting menu, in the Import box select Transactions.
- Choose the file type you want to import. The different available formats are described below.
- With the Browse button, select one or more files containing the transactions to import.
- Set the import parameters according to your needs.
- Confirm with OK.
For more information about the different available options, see the Import into accounting page.

After confirming the import, the data is read and the dialogs needed to complete the operation are displayed:
- Import Transactions dialog, where you can specify the information needed to complete the imported rows.
- Apply rules (Advanced plan), where you can apply or create rules to automatically complete the imported transactions.
Import multiple files at the same time
The File name field shows the path of the file downloaded from the bank. You can also select multiple files or a ZIP file containing several bank statements.
This option is useful, for example:
- if the bank provides one camt.053 file for each day, you can select all the files for the month and import them in a single operation
- if the bank provides a ZIP file, you can directly select the file containing all the statements.
Files imported at the same time must be of the same type. Different formats cannot be imported together.
Bank statement import formats
From the Actions > Import into accounting > Import Transactions menu, you can choose the format corresponding to the file provided by your bank.
Many formats are handled through import extensions, which allow Banana Accounting Plus to read files provided by different banks.
Extensions can be installed and updated from the Extensions > Manage extensions menu.
Standard formats
Several standard formats are available:
Standard Camt ISO 20022 format - Switzerland
This is the standard format used by Swiss banks and should be available from all banks, in some cases upon request. The extension can also decode the payment reference generated by the Invoice Layout CH10 and retrieve useful information, such as the invoice or customer number.
- MT940 account statement
- Generic ISO 20022 Account Statement
Allows you to import ISO 20022 account statements provided by various European banks. - Generic format with Incoming and Outgoing Transactions TXT
For information about the file structure, see the Technical instructions for importing an Income and Expenses file.
These formats are available with the Professional and Advanced plans and with the Free plan up to 70 rows.
Bank-specific formats
In addition to standard formats, many banks provide CSV files or other specific formats.
These files may contain additional information compared with a standard bank statement, for example:
- IBAN;
- QR references;
- information about the payer or beneficiary;
- invoice or customer number;
- additional payment details.
Banana Accounting provides specific import extensions for numerous banks. Since bank formats may change over time, it is important to keep the extensions up to date.
From the Extensions > Manage extensions menu, you can search for and install the extension for your bank.
Bank-specific formats are available with the Banana Accounting Plus Advanced plan.
If you use the Professional plan, you can upgrade to the Advanced plan at any time by paying the difference.
Automatically complete imported transactions
When you import a bank statement, Banana Accounting enters the data available in the bank file into the Transactions table.
With the Rules for the automatic completion of imported transactions, available with the Advanced plan, you can define how Banana should automatically complete recurring transactions.
In this way, during subsequent imports, the program can recognize specific transactions and automatically enter the necessary accounting information, further reducing manual work.
Import file structure
A bank statement file normally contains the main information for each transaction:
- date
- transaction number, if available
- description
- incoming or outgoing amount.
When importing, you specify the accounting account to which the transactions belong. Banana Accounting can then create the transactions by entering the account in the appropriate Debit or Credit column.
It is also possible to create import extensions for other bank statement formats.
For more technical information, see the Technical instructions for importing an Income and Expenses file.
FAQ
I don't see the format for my bank statement. What can I do?
Go to the Extensions > Manage extensions menu and update the list of available extensions. You can then use the filters or search function to find your bank's format.
If the format is not available, also check whether your bank allows you to download the statement in a standard format, such as ISO 20022.
What is the difference between Camt ISO 20022 Bank Statement - Switzerland and Generic ISO 20022 Account Statement?
The Camt ISO 20022 Bank Statement - Switzerland extension is specifically designed for statements from Swiss banks and allows you to use additional information specific to the Swiss payment system.
For example, in the case of QR invoices, the payment reference may contain information such as the invoice or customer number. The extension can automatically extract this data to make it easier to match payments and record them in the accounts.
The Generic ISO 20022 Account Statement, on the other hand, is designed for ISO 20022 files from different countries and banks.
I don't see the format for the PostFinance XML bank statement (.tgz file). How can I import the transactions?
This format is no longer supported. Request the bank statement from PostFinance in ISO 20022 format.
The message "This ISO 20022 file does not contain a bank statement (camt.052/053/054)" appears. What does it mean?
ISO 20022 is a standard that can contain different types of financial messages, and not all of them correspond to a bank statement.
To import bank statements, Banana Accounting Plus uses camt.052, camt.053 and camt.054 messages. The message therefore indicates that the selected file does not contain one of these bank statement types.
My bank is not on the list of supported formats. Can it be added?
Yes. New extensions can be created for bank formats that are not yet supported.
You can contact our customer service. Paid support is also available for implementing custom formats.
I only see collective orders and not the individual payments. Why?
It depends on the settings used in e-banking. Some banks group payments made as a collective order and therefore show only one transaction on the bank statement.
When available, in e-banking choose the individual order option instead of collective order, so that individual payments can be shown separately on the bank statement.
Can I also import credit card statements?
Yes. Banana Accounting allows you to import transactions from various credit cards.
If the format for your card is not yet available, it is possible to consider creating an import extension based on a sample file.
See also the Import credit card page.
Can I import data from other software, including Easy Salary?
Yes. Banana Accounting allows you to retrieve data from various programs.
See the Retrieving data from other programs page for the available options.
