You are receiving this message because Banana cannot locate the file in the path where it was last saved.
Causes
- The file has been moved or renamed.
Someone may have changed the location or name of the file without updating the path in Banana.
- The file was saved in a Cloud folder (OneDrive, Google Drive, iCloud, etc.) and has been moved or synced elsewhere.
Cloud services can sync files across different devices or keep them online-only, making them inaccessible locally.
- The file was accidentally deleted or only an older version exists.
This can happen if the file was deleted, but some Cloud services may have saved a previous version.
- The file was saved in an unclear or hard-to-find location.
For example, it might be in the Downloads folder or a temporary location.
Solutions
1. Check if the file has been moved or renamed
- Open File Explorer on Windows or Finder on Mac.
- Search for the file using its name or the “.ac2” extension.
- Windows: Press Windows key + E, then type the file name in the search bar at the top right.
- Mac: Open Finder and use the search bar at the top right.
- If you find the file, open it manually and add it to your Favorites in Banana to locate it more easily in the future.
- If the file you were trying to open was in your Recent Files, right-click on it and select “Open File Location.” This will open the folder where Banana last found the file.
2. Check your Cloud folder or online storage
- If you save files on a Cloud service, check that they haven’t been moved to a subfolder or synced online-only.
- Open your Cloud management panel (e.g., OneDrive, Google Drive) and search for the file by name or with the “.ac2” extension.
- Previous versions: If the file seems to be missing, try restoring it from previous versions saved by the Cloud service.
3. Check the Recycle Bin or Trash folder
- Windows: Open the Recycle Bin and search for the file.
- Mac: Go to the Trash in the Dock.
- If you find it, restore it to its original location and try opening it again.
4. Check suggested file locations
Verify if the file has been saved in one of the common locations, for example:
- Windows:
C:\Users\[your name]\Documents\Banana Accounting
- Mac:
Macintosh HD/Users/[your name]/Documents/Banana Accounting
- If no dedicated folder exists, we recommend creating one for your accounting files.
5. Create a new organization system for your files
- Create a folder named “Banana Accounting” in your Documents or on a Cloud service of your choice. For more information, visit: Managing folders and files.
- Move all your accounting files there to locate them more easily in the future.
- Add your most important files to the Banana Favorites.
