Use of the software in university accounting courses

In this article

In the field of Economic Education in University, students take an accounting course which is generally divided into several semesters.
In this context, basic concepts such as double-entry accounting, balance sheet and income statement are provided.

Banana Accounting is used to put teaching more in line with the reality of a company, where accounting is managed through software. The university course is oriented to provide the theoretical bases and is not allowing for much time for exercises. Banana Accounting lends itself well for this, as it is conceived similarly to a spreadsheet. Students immediately familiarize themselves with the Accounts and Transactions tables.

Objectives

The use of the Banana Accounting program is aimed at making the explanation of theoretical concepts more concrete. Students generally use IT tools, so it is logical to approach accounting issues by taking the advantage offered by a program.

  • Provide theoretical and practical information.
  • Understand how to set up accounting software.
  • Understand the sequence of accounting setup, posting of entries, printing of reports.
  • Get familiar with realistic balance sheets, income statement printouts (instead of simply using the traditional T).
  • Offer students the opportunity to practice recording data and using their device (computer, tablet or smartphone).
  • Make sure that students can focus better on more advanced activities (balance sheet and income statement checking) and do not waste precious time in making calculations by hand.

Methodology

The teacher prepares the theoretical explanations by referring to practical examples, set up with Banana Accounting. Students can follow the teacher and practice the software to create new files or use those prepared by the teacher.

  • In parallel to the theoretical training, the teacher prepares examples of accounting and double-entry registrations with Banana Accounting.
  • Screenshots from the program are displayed during the lesson and show:
    • Accounts table, setting of accounts and structure of the balance sheet and income statement.
    • Transactions table, posting items, simple transactions or on multiple accounts.
    • Balance sheet and income statement results are displayed directly in the Accounts table.
    • Balance sheet and income statement printouts, with the complete layout of the national chart of accounts.
    • Account cards and other analyses.
  • During the lesson or afterwards, at home, students can practice using Banana Accounting directly on their computer, tablet or smartphone.
