Opening Balances | Cash Manager

The opening balance must be entered manually only when you create a Cash Manager file with Banana Accounting for the first time. In the Accounts table, enter the opening cash balance in the Opening column.

In subsequent years, you do not need to enter the opening balance again. When you create the file for the new year with the Actions > Create new year command, Banana Accounting automatically carries forward the closing balance of the previous year as the opening balance of the new year.

Cash Manager allows you to manage only one account. If you need to manage multiple accounts, use Income & Expense accounting.

Resume accounting from the beginning of the year

You can recreate the entire accounting starting from the beginning of the year:

  • In the Accounts table, Opening column, enter the cash balance at the beginning of the year.
  • In the Transactions table, also enter all transactions for the year that were already recorded with the previous program.

This way, all transactions for the year are available and can be viewed in a single Banana Accounting file.

For more information, see the Retrieving data from other programs page.

Resume accounting from a date during the year

You can also start recording in Banana Accounting from a specific date during the year.

In this case:

  • In the Accounts table, Opening column, enter the cash balance as of the date you start using Banana Accounting.
  • In the Categories table, enter the balances accumulated up to that date:
    • Income balances as positive amounts
    • Expense balances as negative amounts.
  • From that date onward, enter new transactions as usual in the Transactions table.

This way, Banana Accounting also takes into account the income and expenses already recorded with the previous program.

Previous year balances

If you start a new accounting file by transferring data from an existing accounting file and want to display the previous year's values in the reports as well, you must enter the corresponding balances manually.

In the Accounts and Categories tables, switch to the Previous view and enter the following in the Previous year column:

  • in the Accounts table, the previous year's closing balance of the Cash account
  • in the Categories table, the previous year's closing balances of the Income categories
  • in the Categories table, the previous year's closing balances of the Expense categories, entering the amounts with a minus sign (-).

These values are used to show a comparison with the previous year in the reports.

Create new year

When you move to the new year using the Actions > Create new year command, Banana Accounting creates the file for the new accounting year and automatically carries forward the necessary balances.

Therefore, you do not need to manually enter the opening balance again every year.

For more information, see the Create new year page. Create new year.

Print opening balances

To print the opening balances, you can use one of the following methods:

  • Use the Print/Preview command from the File menu to print the contents of the table and select the desired rows.
