Error: cannot open file due to '%1'.

This error message is shown when it is not possible to access the file.
The full name of the file is also shown.

Causes

Instead of  %1 the program shows the error message that your operating system reports to the program (in your operating system language)

Possible causes:

  • You indicated a wrong file name
  • The file is still memorized in the recent files list, favorites or in the import dialogue window, but the file or the folder where the file was stored has been deleted, moved or renamed.
  • The disc, file or folder are not visible for you as a user anymore because
    • The network disc has been disconnected or the connection is no longer possible
    • You logged in with a different user name
    • The file was located in a Dropbox synchronization folder or in another system that is no longer available at the moment
    • The file was located in a temporary files folder, that your operating system has deleted
  • The access to the file has been blocked by the operating system (insufficient access rights)
  • The file name is contained in a relative path (for example "..\...\test\import.csv") that is no longer correct.

Solutions

  • Check what error cause applies to your case
  • Indicate the correct file name
  • Look for or restore your file
  • Delete the file from your  favorites files list or clean the recent files list
  • If you opened the file through a link, the recent files list or the favorites files list, try to reopen it via the File menu > Open
  • If you are working on macOS 10.15 or newer choose Apple menu  > System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Files and Folders. Select the checkbox below Banana Accounting to allow it to access files and folders in that location
