Error: saving to disk not possible due to '%1'

Causes

The main causes of the error are:

  • The location where you want to save the file is write-protected (Read-only).
    • You are trying to save the file in a protected or system folder.
    • You do not have the necessary permissions to make changes in that location.
  • The file cannot be saved due to the error: "Unable to open the file due to Read-only file system."
  • The file is in use by another process (for example, if Dropbox is syncing files, write access may be temporarily blocked). In this case, the file may be overwritten shortly after.
  • An antivirus or computer protection system is preventing the program from writing to that folder.
  • On Windows, controlled folder access has been enabled, preventing even trusted software from writing to protected folders.
  • On macOS 10.15 and later, privacy settings prevent access to the folder where the file is being saved.

Solutions

  • Save the file with a new name ( File menu > command Save As) or select an unprotected location (e.g., Desktop, a writable folder, or a writable storage device).
  • Choose a different storage location:
    • Save the file in another location, such as the Documents or Desktop folder.
    • Avoid write-protected directories like "C:\Program Files" or "C:\Windows".
  • Check folder permissions:
    • Right-click on the target folder and select Properties.
    • Ensure that the attribute "Read-only" is disabled.
    • Under Security > Edit, check if your user account has write permissions.
  • If using a cloud storage system (OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive):
    • Check if the file is syncing or locked.
    • Temporarily save the file locally and try uploading it again.
  • If using a USB stick or external drive:
    • Check if the device is write-protected or if there is a formatting issue. Customize controlled access to folders.
  • If Controlled Folder Access is enabled, allow Banana Accounting to make changes to protected folders by adding the Bananaplus.exe file (usually found in "C:\Program Files\Bananaplus") to the list of authorized programs.
  • If using macOS 10.15 or later versions, go to Mac Apple > System Preferences > Security > Privacy and enable the checkbox under Banana Accounting to allow access to files and folders in the specified location.
