We welcome and appreciate contributions from our clients who wish to add new languages or improve existing translations of Banana Accounting+.

The application is built using the Qt framework, which offers a powerful translation system. You can use Qt Linguist to create or update translations and submit them to us. After verification and testing, your contribution may be integrated into our official release.

Important: Please contact us at info@banana.ch before you begin. Let us know if you plan to add a new language or improve an existing one. We will provide you with the latest translation files.

How to contribute

  1. Install Qt Linguist
Learn more about Qt Linguist and the translation process here:
    https://doc.qt.io/qt-6/linguist-translators.html
  2. Download+Translation Files
Get the latest translation source files from our Github repository BananaAccounting/Community/translations
    Last update: 2025-05-20
You can also contact us for the most up-to-date version.
  3. Create a New Translation File
Copy the file banana_xxx.ts  (where xxx is your language code) and rename it, for example
    banana_de.ts for German.
  4. Add translations
Open your .ts file with Qt Linguist and begin translating the missing texts. Mark completed translations with the green checkmark.
  5. Submit Your Work
When finished, send your translated .ts file (e.g. banana_xx.ts) to info@banana.ch
If available, also include the qt_xx.ts file for your language.
Please do not continue translating after submission - wait for us to send the next updated version.

Guidelines and Notes

Translating the texts

  • You cannot edit the English source text. If you find an error, let us know.
  • To compare with other languages, open their respective .ts files. Qt Linguist allows multple .ts files to be opened at the same time, making it easy to compare the translations.
  • If a term is unclear, check the developer's notes or comments.
  • For questions, use the "Translator Notes" field and prefix your comment with TODO: so we can easily identify and extract them later

Special characters and placeholders

  • You will find %1, %2, %3  within the text.
The symbol %1 will be replaced by the program by the appropriate value (account number, date, file name, etc.).
If there is a %1, %2, %*  this should also be present in the translation in the appropriate place.
  • Banana Accounting columns name an table names.
    For example "ReportWithMovements;With mov.;with movements"
    • The text is separated by the semicolumn ";"
    • First part is the field name, in the translated text
      • No space or special characters
      • Camel case (first charachter of the word is Capital)
    • Second part is the column header. The translated text, when possible, shoud fit in the column width.
    • Third part is the full description, it is displayed as a tooltip when you go with the mouse on the column header.

Do not translate

  • You can avoid translating strings in the following Context
    • ResocontoIvaCh*

Testing your translation before submission

You can verify how your translation look in the Banana accounting software - here is how to proceed:

  • Compile your .ts translation file following Qt Linguistic instructions
  • Copy all the files output/*.qm in the Lang folder of the Banana software
  • Restart Banana Accounting+ and select your language from the menu command Tools > Options
  • If some text does not display at the correct place it is due to different software version
